A calendar year has 52 weeks and 1 day. In a leap year it has 52 weeks and 2 days.
That leftover day is the whole story. 52 weeks is 364 days, and a year is 365 — so the weeks never line up neatly with the year, which is why your birthday lands on a different weekday each year, and why some years end up with a 53rd numbered week.
The exact number
Divide the days in a year by seven:

So "52 weeks" is a rounding-down. If you are counting something that happens weekly — a payment, a class, a delivery — you get 52 of them in most years, and occasionally 53, depending on which weekday you started.
Why some years have 53 weeks
There are two different things people mean by "week 1 of the year", and only one of them can produce a 53rd week.
Under the ISO 8601 standard, which most of Europe and most payroll and planning software uses, weeks start on Monday and week 1 is the week containing the first Thursday of January. Under that rule a year has 53 weeks when 1 January falls on a Thursday, or when it falls on a Wednesday in a leap year.
That works out to 71 years in every 400 — roughly one year in every five or six. The next ones are:

2026 is a 53-week year. If you run weekly reporting, that extra week is the one that quietly breaks year-on-year comparisons.
Weeks in a school year and a work year
These are the two follow-up questions people usually have, and neither answer is 52.
- A school year is about 39 to 40 weeks of teaching in the UK, US and Australia — 175 to 190 school days, depending on the country and district, spread across roughly ten months.
- A work year starts at 52 weeks, then loses public holidays and annual leave. In the US, a typical 2 weeks of leave plus 10 federal holidays leaves about 48 working weeks. In much of Europe, with 25 days of statutory leave plus public holidays, it is closer to 45 working weeks.
- A pay year is 52 weekly pay runs, 26 fortnightly, or 24 semi-monthly — and in a 53-week year, weekly payrolls hit an extra run.
Working it out for a specific stretch of time
Weeks are easy to eyeball once you know the trick: divide the days by seven, and the remainder is the number of extra days.
- 30 days is 4 weeks and 2 days
- 90 days is 12 weeks and 6 days
- 100 days is 14 weeks and 2 days
- 365 days is 52 weeks and 1 day
