Calendar Days vs Business Days: What's the Difference?

Calendar days count every day: weekdays, weekends, public holidays, all of it. Business days count only the days most offices are open — Monday to Friday, minus public holidays.
The difference matters more than it sounds. "Within 10 days" and "within 10 business days" can be two weeks apart.
The conversion, in practice
Because a week holds five business days and seven calendar days, the rough conversion is to multiply by 1.4 — then add a day for every public holiday in the window.

The range on the short end is where people get caught out. Three business days from a Monday is Thursday. Three business days from a Thursday is the following Tuesday — five calendar days later, and six if the Monday is a holiday.
Where each one shows up
Business days are the default in anything contractual or regulated: bank transfers and cheque clearing, refund and chargeback windows, notice periods in employment contracts, court filing deadlines, statutory response times, shipping estimates from most couriers.
Calendar days are the default everywhere else: rental and hire agreements, hotel and event cancellation windows, medical waiting-time targets, warranty periods, and almost anything measured in months or years.
If a document says "days" without qualifying it, the fallback rule in most common-law jurisdictions is calendar days — but that default can be overridden by the contract itself, so it is worth checking rather than assuming.
Which holidays count
There is no universal list, and this is where cross-border deadlines go wrong. A US business day is not a UK business day: the US has around 11 federal holidays a year, the UK 8 bank holidays in England and Wales, and Japan 16. A five-business-day window starting the same morning can end on different dates in each country.

Counting it yourself
The simplest reliable method for business days, without a tool:
- Divide the number of business days by 5 to get whole weeks.
- Multiply those weeks by 7 for calendar days.
- Add the remaining business days one at a time, skipping Saturday and Sunday.
- Add one calendar day for each public holiday you land on or pass.
For example, 12 business days: 2 whole weeks (14 calendar days), plus 2 more business days — so if you started on a Monday, you finish on the Wednesday 16 calendar days later, or Thursday if a public holiday sits in between.

Working days, business days, clear days
Three more terms worth separating, because contracts use them precisely.
- Working days and business days are used interchangeably in most of the world. Some sectors define working days by their own opening hours rather than the standard week.
- Clear days exclude both the first and the last day. "Seven clear days' notice" before a meeting on the 20th means notice by the 12th, not the 13th.
- Banking days exclude days when the banking system is closed, which can differ from public holidays — and for international transfers, both countries' banking calendars apply.
Quick answers
Is Saturday a business day? Not in the standard definition. Some retail and logistics businesses count it; financial and legal deadlines do not.
How long is 10 business days? Two calendar weeks, assuming no public holidays — so 14 calendar days.
Does the count include today? Usually not. Most deadlines start counting from the next business day after the triggering event.
